Owl Hat
I'm making an owl halloween costume for my two year old. Most costumes I've seen have an owl mask but that won't work for her. So I decided to make her an owl hat. She can wear it all winter!
This is my first pinterest project that doesn't look like a kindergarten class project.

Size
Toddler to grade schooler. J is a small 2 year old. This would fit anyone 1-8 years old (older kids have tried it on).
Yarn
I used two skeins of wool-ease in held together and the hat is thick and warm. It's also washable. You could use any worsted weight yarn holding two strands together or one strand of bulky yarn.
Needles
I used size 10, 16-inch circular. You could just use double pointed needles. For the kitchner stitching at the end, I used size 10 straight needles. You could finish it by simply sewing but I like the finished look of the kitchner stitch. I used fingerling cotton yarn to sew the felt eyes and nose.
How to
On size 10 circular needles, cast on 56 stitches. Making sure not to twist, join together.
Row 1-8: K2, P2 around
Row 9: Knit
Work in knit stitch for ~7 inches
Divide work into two sections of 28 stitches.
Join with kitchener stitch.
Finishing
Work in ends.
I made little tassels by tying strands of yarn together in the middle. I did this without step 4.
Cut big white and small black felt circles for eyes and orange triangle for beak. I sewed them on using a backstitch
Learn from my mistakes. Do not try to shortcut and glue the eyes/nose with super glue! It doesn't work, makes the hat smell bad and is likely flammable in the dryer.
Changing to adult size
For an adult size, cast on 60 or 64 stitches. Work the same. Divide work into two sections of 30 or 32 stitches.
